YOUR 20 DAY MOVING PLANNING GUIDE

DAY 1

File a change
of address form
with the Post
Office for each
person receiving
mail at your home.

DAY 2

Notify creditors, magazines, and book clubs of your new address.

DAY 3

Contact doctors and dentists for your family’s medical records.

Ask your physicians for colleague recommendations for your new city.

Get copies of renewable prescriptions.

DAY 4

Decide which items should be discarded or donated to charity. (Consider having a garage sale.)

Complete a home inventory listing each possession, date purchased, and value.

Day 5

Notify your local utilities to have your service turned off after your departure.

Contact utilities in your new city for connections.

Notify your children’s schools, your church, clubs, and any other organizations of your impending move.

DAY 6

Decide which items you will be packing or the items your mover will be packing. (Your Certified Moving Consultant can provide a variety of packing materials at a reasonable price.)

DAY 7

Sketch out the floor plan of your new home and determine placement of furnishings.

Make a list of names, addresses, and numbers you will need or want to remember.

DAY 8

Pack your phone book so you can contact businesses after you move.

Notify your Certified Moving Consultant if you have changed anything about your move.

DAY 9

Arrange to move your plants and pets. (Your Certified Moving Consultant can give you advise on the best methods.)

Transfer contents of safety deposit box.

DAY 10

Check homeowner’s insurance policies to see if moving is covered.

Transfer insurance to cover fire, theft, and personal property at your new home.

DAY 11

If you are shipping an automobile, plan to have the gasoline tank less than half full and make sure there is sufficient antifreeze and oil.

DAY 12

Plan your trip to your new destination. (Make travel accommodations, and if driving, have your car serviced.)

Returned borrowed things and collect things you have loaned.

DAY 13

Make arrangements for servicing your appliances both at your current home and your new home. (Your Certified Moving Consultant can assist you with arranging these services, if desired.)

DAY 14

Dispose of flammables such as gasoline, matches, cleaning fluids, bleach, pressurized or aerosol cans, and ammunition.

Discontinue regular services such as newspaper, trash pickup, lawn service, etc.

DAY 15

If moving your
television antenna or your
satellite dish, arrange to have it taken down. (Your Certified Moving Consultant can arrange this service for you, if desired.)

DAY 16

Arrange for payment to your Matthews Moving Systems driver at destination. (Payment by cash, certified check, money order, or credit card is required before unloading unless prior approval and arrangements have been made to bill your employer.)

DAY 17

Transfer bank and savings accounts so you do not lose interest.

DAY 18

Arrange to discontinue your local telephone service. (Your local telephone company can help you establish phone services at your new home.)

DAY 19

Determine which items you are taking with you.

Pack these items and set aside in designated area.

Have rugs and draperies cleaned. (Keep in protective cleaner’s bags.)

DAY 20

Use up your frozen food supply or give it to a neighbor.

Drain the fuel from your lawnmowers and other power equipment.

DAY BEFORE

Pack a box of things you will need as soon as you arrive at your new home. (This might include non-aerosol-cleaning supplies, disposable plates and cups, light tools, snacks, bathroom items and trash bags.)

Take this box with you or have the driver load it last and unload first.

This is usually the day packing is done. Make sure all packing services have been performed before you sign for them.

Defrost, clean and dry refrigerator.

MOVING DAY

Be on hand when the Matthews Moving Systems driver arrives and throughout the loading process. (If you will not be there, make sure someone will be there to direct the movers. Make sure the driver has in writing the name and phone number of that person.)


Make a final tour of your home. See that nothing is overlooked. Lock all windows and doors, and turn off all switches.

Sign the bill of lading and make sure your new address and phone number are correct.

DAY AFTER

Arrive at your new home a day ahead of time, if possible, to make sure utilities are connected and to plan placement of major items in your home.

Be on hand to pay the driver with cash, certified check, money order, or credit card prior to your goods being unloaded.
